J. S. Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was born in 1685 to a family of musicians, many of whom held positions as Lutheran church organists.  At the age of 19, J.S. Bach himself became an organist in a town named Arnstadt.

Moving through several increasingly responsible positions, Bach was eventually offered a position as a court musician in Weimar.  When he tried to leave Weimar for another court, the Duke of Weimar sent him to jail for several days.  Needless to say, Bach eventually tired of courtly life.

Bach finally settled into a position as a musical director of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig.   He remained there for nearly 25 years.

Bach's musical quality and output were profound.  His best-loved works include hundreds of sacred cantatas, his Mass in B Minor, the Brandenburg Concertos, and many organ fugues.

Bach often appended the words "Soli Deo Gloria," or "All Glory to God" to his compositions.

He is also believed to have said, "All music should have no other end and aim than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul."
