Daniel Goleman

Daniel Goleman, Ph.D. is a trained clinical psychologist who has written on behavioral sciences for the New York Times and served as a faculty member at Harvard.  Mr. Goleman has also written extensively on spirituality and meditation, and has co-authored books with several spiritual luminaries, including Ram Dass (Richard Alpert, Ph.D.)

Emotional Intelligence

In Emotional Intelligence (review or buy), Daniel Goleman defines an alternative to IQ – "emotional intelligence." Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness and impulse control, persistence, zeal, and self-motivation, empathy, and social deftness. These, says Mr. Goleman, are the hallmarks of character and self-discipline, of altruism and compassion – basic capacities that are needed if our society is to thrive.

Social Intelligence

In his book Social Intelligence (review or buy), Daniel Goleman writes that our reactions to other people, and their reactions to us, have a far-reaching impact. In his book, Goleman explains the surprising accuracy of first impressions, the basis of charisma and emotional power, the complexity of sexual attraction, and how we detect lies. He describes the “dark side” of social intelligence, from narcissism to Machiavellianism and psychopathy.

The Creative Spirit

Daniel Goleman, Paul Kaufman, and Michael Ray combine to write the illuminating book on creativity, The Creative Spirit (review or buy).  Based on the PBS special of the same name, the book explores the process of creativity.  Conversations with educators, Zen masters, and creativity teachers fill the book, and help to bring its powerful ideas onto a very practical level.

Working With Emotional Intelligence

In Working with Emotional Intelligence (review or buy), Mr. Goleman speaks about how to apply these ideas in the context of business and the workplace.  He demonstrates how self-awareness, motivation, and team-building can strengthen businesses, and how these qualities can be encouraged.
