Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817, in Concord, Massachusetts.  Having developed a keen interest in nature, he attended Concord Academy and Harvard college before becoming acquainted with Ralph Waldo Emerson, known as the "father of transcendentalism."

After college, Thoreau became a teacher, carpenter, and businessman, and developed friendships with Emerson and other new thinkers.  Around 1845, Thoreau moved to Walden Pond, where he built a one-room cabin and decided to "live deliberately."  For several years he lived at the pond, writing, contemplating, and enjoying an unencumbered life.  His classic Walden was written during this time.

Walden

Walden (review or buy) is known as one of the greatest philosophical meditations in American literature.  Written during a stay in a log cabin near Walden Pond, Walden was first published on August 9, 1854. The book expresses a fervent passion for living life simply, immediately, and free of restricting conventions and habits.
