Jewish Publication Society: Tanakh
Since 1888, the Philadelphia-based Jewish Publication Society has been regarded as "the Jewish publisher for the Jewish people." In 1917, the JPS published a definitive English translation of the Tanakh (click to buy) -- the books known as the Torah, Prophets (Nevi'im), and Writings (Kethuvim). Although these books roughly correspond to the Christian "Old Testament," there are many differences in translations. With its easy, flowing language, the JPS version is enjoyed by Jews and non-Jews alike. In 1988, the JPS released an updated translation with modernized language. As the 1917 version is now in the public domain, we have offered selections from this version. Torah, Book of Exodus The following selections focus on Moses, from his vision of the burning bush to the parting of the Red Sea. Moses, who was called by God to lead the Israelites to freedom, represents a man who -- despite his doubts and fears -- chose to follow God's call. |
