Lama Surya Das

Lama Surya Das was born Jeffrey Miller in Long Island, NY, and attended the State University of Buffalo.  After studying with such spiritual masters as Neem Karoli Baba and various Tibetan Buddhist teachers, he helped found the SEVA organization and the Dzogchen Foundation in Cambridge, MA. A member of the International Padmakara Translation Committee, Mr. Das has been active in translating, editing and publishing Buddhist books and scriptures for many years. He is known for his clear, conversational writing style.

Awakening the Buddha Within

In Awakening the Buddha Within (review or buy), Lama Surya Das shares the message of Buddhism, which is that each of us has the wisdom, awareness, love, and power of the Buddha within. In his book, Mr. Das shows how we can awaken to who we really are in order to lead a more compassionate, enlightened, and balanced life. It illuminates the guidelines and key principles embodied in the noble Eight-Fold Path and other Buddhist trainings.

Awakening to the Sacred

Awakening to the Sacred (review or buy) continues the themes of Lama Surya Das's message.  In this book, he combines Buddhist practices with a variety of other spiritual philosophies to show how to create a personalized spiritual practice based on your own individual beliefs, aspirations, and needs.

Awakening the Buddhist Heart

In Awakening the Buddhist Heart (review or buy), Lama Surya Das writes about developing spiritual intelligence -- a sense of compassion that helps us be more sensitive, more aware of our own feelings and the feelings of those around us. Cultivating spiritual intelligence and learning how to connect, he writes, will improve our capacity for intimacy, making us better mates, friends, parents, and coworkers; it helps all of us to become more giving and brings us fulfillment, and meaning.

Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be

Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be (review or buy) addresses life's most universal difficulties in a way that is accessible to all. By using memorable concepts such as The Virtues of Adversity, The Pearl Principle ("No inner irritation, no pearl"), and Gaining through Loss, Surya reminds readers that hiding from change and loss is futile. Learning to consciously accept and embrace change leads to a better understanding of ourselves and our own innate divine light.
