Your intuition is speaking to you all the time. In fact, you can tap into it whenever and wherever you want. You probably already have – without knowing it. Have you ever:

  • followed an urge to take a different route, and discovered later that you avoided a horrendous traffic jam?
  • listened to your friend tell you about her engagement, silently heard an inner voice say, "It won't last" – and watched her break it off a few months later?
  • quit your job without knowing what your next step would be, only to have a better opportunity land in your lap within a few days?
  • suddenly come up with just the right words to say to help your child open up to you about a difficult situation at school?
  • had a flash that adding a new and unusual ingredient would turn your tired spaghetti sauce recipe into something special?

The hunch, gut feeling, judgment call, sudden insight, or flash out of the blue are all intuition. Your intuitive "Aha!" can compel you to take a risk, come up with a creative solution, meet a new friend, choose the right school for your child, put ingredients together in a new way, resolve a longstanding problem...you name it.

Intuition is not a talent reserved for very special folks: It’s a gift we use every day, whether we know it or not. The secret is that you don’t have to wait for lightning to strike in order to put your intuition to work: You can learn, to listen and understand what the deepest wisdom of your soul is telling you. It's easier than you may think!

Do You Get the Picture?

Close your eyes and imagine that you have an inner compass that is always pointing you in the right direction. See it in as much detail as you can, and know that it is inside you, where you can always find it when you need it. This is a marvelous metaphor to represent your intuitive mind. I love to collect intuition metaphors. If you don’t resonate with the inner compass, find a metaphor that speaks to you. Don’t worry if you can’t come up with one right away – you’ll find many more in this book.
